I realize it sounds strange, using a “Mexican” cheese on an “Italian” dish, but CannonBelles Queso Fresco is similar to Mozzarella in many ways: They are both “fresh” cheeses, both are mild and melt well. What more do you need? Here is our easy and delicious pizza sauce recipe:
To make pizza, you can make your own dough, buy a pre-made crust at the store, or easiest of all, use hamburger buns for the crust: It can be a great snack, appetizer, lunch, or perfect for movie night with the kids!
15 ounces Tomato Sauce
½ teaspoon Oregano
½ teaspoon Basil
¼ teaspoon Garlic Powder
1/8 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
1 Tablespoon Sugar
Mix all sauce ingredients together over medium heat, stirring constantly until it comes to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and allow the sauce to cool.
This makes enough sauce for 12 Hamburger Bun pizzas, 4 small pizzas (8 inch) or 2 large pizzas (14 inch).
For Hamburger Bun pizzas, preheat your oven to 450 degrees.
Lightly oil a cookie sheet. Use about 1 Tablespoon of sauce for each piece of the bun and place sauce side up in your cookie sheet. Put whatever toppings you like on your pizza, and finish up with about 1 ounce, or ¼ Cup shredded Queso Fresco.
Bake at 450 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until desired doneness.
